The San Francisco 49ers will play their third different player at the quarterback position this year when Ken Dorsey takes the field this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A few weeks ago, Dorsey's chances of seeing any playing time this year seemed next to nothing. Then, things changed.
The 49ers started their first pick in the draft, Alex Smith, to replace quarterback Tim Rattay a few weeks ago. Rattay had not done horribly, but the 49ers were already heading downhill. The 49ers traded Rattay right before the trading deadline in Week 6, moving Dorsey to the second spot on the roster.
Then, Smith came down with an injury last week and will need to rest this week. He has two strainged ligaments in his right knee.
"My position is that no matter what happens, I'm going to go out there and prepare and be ready to go," Dorsey said. "I have a lot of faith in this coaching staff, and they're going to make the best decision."
Dorsey saw plenty of action last year, but was not spectacular. Smith hasn't been too good this year yet, throwing five interceptions and no touchdowns against the Colts and the Redskins.
