With the twenty-third pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. With wide receiver Robert Meachem and offensive tackle Joe Staley each still on the board, it was a surprise that they did not select one of them instead.

Bowe really improved himself in his final year at LSU, partially due to having a solid quarterback in JaMarcus Russell throwing to him. In fact, Bowe was Russell's primary target this past season. Compared to the other "Dwayne" (Dwayne Jarrett), Bowe has a little better speed for a receiver. He has shown power in the past, which helps him brake tackles after the catch as well as blocking on running plays. His strength made him a threat in the red zone for Russell, as he caught 65 passes for 990 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season. He hasn't had as much playing time in college as some players receive, which creates some hope that he'll have a chance to explode in the NFL.

His speed is only average, and he needs to work on his route running ability. He needs to focus more on catching the ball with his hands in certain situations, rather than using his body exclusively. Sometimes, the mental mistakes get the better of Bowe, as he drops the ball occasionally and has difficulty recognizing defensive coverages.
