The New York Giants announced that Jerry Reese, the team's director of player of personnel, would replace former general manager Ernie Accorsi. Accorsi retired following the Giants' exit from the playoffs after spending nine seasons with the team.
"Not to sound cliched, but I really feel like it's my time to carry the torch," Reese said on Tuesday. "Many people went before me who suffered through this process and now it's my time. I'm looking forward to this challenge. It's my time to keep this dream alive. It's very important to me and I don't take it lightly."
The Giants' organization was impressed with the decisions that Reese had made in the past regarding the draft, and felt that he would be a solid fit for general manager. He was involved with the Giants' trade during the draft a few years ago to acquire quarterback Eli Manning from the San Diego Chargers.
"I was very impressed with way Jerry ran the draft," said Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. "The efficiency, the leadership and the way the room was organized. You can waste an awful lot of time on things that aren't critical, and Jerry never let that happen."
Now that he's taken over, one of Reese's main objectives will be to ensure the continuing development of Manning. Although Manning has shown signs of inconsistency throughout his first few seasons in the league, Reese feels that he is definitely the team's franchise quarterback still and will only get better next year.
