With the seventh pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected running back Adrian Peterson. This may come as a surprise to many teams, as the Vikings already have Chester Taylor on their roster. The move to take Peterson may have occurred as a result of the Redskins taking LaRon Landry, a safety that they really coveted.

Considered the best running back in the draft, Adrian Peterson is almost certainly going to be a top-ten pick. If he had not broken his collarbone this past season, he would have been in the running for the Heisman trophy again. Peterson displays all of the qualities a team would want from a featured back, including power, speed, patience, and vision. He has shown the ability to run effectively both on the inside and the outside and can use his power to break away from oncoming defenders. Although he rarely caught passes in college, there isn't a major concern over his hands. Although he may not be as flashy as Reggie Bush, Peterson may be considered the best actual "running back" coming out of college in the past three classes.

The injury factor is really the only major concern for Peterson, but that shouldn't affect his draft status too much. Going back to his receiving skills - although he didn't have many opportunities to catch the ball in college, teams won't know how good he is at doing so until he is on their team. Like most running backs coming out of college, he hasn't established himself as a monstrous blocker. He will sometimes run with his body exposed too much, something that coaches will probably try to coach him to improve upon in the NFL.

Peterson attended Palestine High School in Palestine, Texas. His best season for the Oklahoma Sooners actually came as a freshman when he carried the ball 339 times for 1,925 yards and 15 touchdowns. In this year's Fiesta Bowl, he returned from injury and carried the ball 20 times for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns. Peterson should be the quickest, or at least tied for the quickest, in terms of running backs in this year's class.

Peterson may need surgery that will keep him out a few weeks of minicamp.
