Shortly after releasing Darrell Jackson, the San Francisco 49ers signed veteran receiver Bryant Johnson. Johnson, who has spent the past five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, has caught 210 passes for 2,675 yards and nine touchdowns during his career.
Many people have believed that Johnson was capable of being a team's No. 1 or No. 2 receiver, but he wasn't going to get that chance in Arizona behind Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.
"Bryant is a young, talented player," said 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan. "He brings big-play capabilities to the offense, and we feel he will bring in an added dimension to the talent we already have on board."
The 49ers' two starting receivers could pan out to be Johnson and long-time Rams receiver Isaac Bruce, who was signed earlier in the offseason. Veterans Arnaz Battle and Ashley Lelie are also expected to compete for playing time next season.
