The San Francisco 49ers signed first-round draft pick Joe Staley on Tuesday, agreeing to a five-year deal worth around $10 million. Staley, an offensive tackle selected with the 28th overall pick, should also have around $5.6 million guaranteed.
The 49ers still have work to do with another first round pick, that being linebacker Patrick Willis. Willis was taken with the 11th overall pick in the draft.
Staley was considered a solid offensive lineman in the draft, possibly third on the list of wants only behind Joe Thomas and Levi Brown. Here is Staley's scouting report from before the draft:
Positives: Hailing from Central Michigan, Staley is about as best as they come in terms of left tackles who can move. His timed speed, quickness, and agility have been praised numerous times by scouts. He can change direction quickly, aiding his ability to adjust to blitzes or defensive changes on the fly. He has improved consistently over the years and has shown the potential to grow.
Negatives: Staley is still relatively new to the position. Although quickness is important for a tackle, there is fear that he may struggle upon entrance to the NFL if he doesn't bulk up and improve his power.
Notes: Staley started his college career as a tight end only weighing 220 pounds. Although he can play left tackle well in the NFL, he could be a ways away from reaching his full potential, and may be placed in a backup role to start his career unless he is drafted by a team with a superior line.
