The San Francisco 49ers have found another number one receiver. Days after trading the troubled Brandon Lloyd, the team signed Bryant to a four-year deal worth about $15 million. Bryant, who played for the Cleveland Browns for one and a half seasons, was one of the top receiving free agents.
"I understand that the team is young," said Bryant. "I'm one of those guys who is young and looking for the opportunity to come out here and blossom with something new and fresh. I figure if I was going to start over, this was a perfect opportunity."
Last year, Bryant had 69 catches for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns. He did very well for the Browns, but was also known for having drops during a critical juncture of a game. Bryant also had trouble with the Dallas Cowboys a few years ago when he threw his uniform at Bill Parcells.
"I knew I had some baggage, but all in all I still feel like I (can) come in here and prove that I'm capable of being the receiver they need to be," Bryant said. "I have a fresh canvas, I can definitely paint and what better organization? They've got a lot of great players, (and) it's the home of receivers."
49ers head coach Mike Nolan believes that Bryant will be the perfect fit for the 49ers, however.
"I wanted to hear him talk specifically about a couple of instances they've had," Nolan said. "He talked about how he's matured and the things he's learned. He does get excited about certain things. He wants to get the ball ... and at times maybe hasn't shown that in the best ways."
Alex Smith, the first overall pick in the draft this past season, will be throwing to Bryant. Bryant was used to catching from a young quarterback last year in Charlie Frye.
