No matter how many awards LaDainian Tomlinson wins, he'd substitute them all for a Super Bowl ring. After already being named The Associated Press Most Valuable Player of the year, the San Diego Chargers running back also won the Offensive Player of the Year award. Tomlinson certainly earned it after scoring 31 total touchdowns this season. Tomlinson received 38 of a possible 50 total votes. Tomlinson was followed by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who had eight votes. Two other players received votes: Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning (3 votes) and St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson (1 vote).
This marks the third straight season that the MVP was also named the offensive player of the year. If this rate continues, is there really a point in having separate awards?
On the other side of the ball, Miami Dolphins defensive end/linebacker won the Defensive Player of the Year award. Although he may retire, it was perhaps the best year Taylor has ever had, despite being on a losing team. Taylor had 62 tackles, 13.5 sacks, and two interceptions taken back for touchdowns this season. The most impressive statistic: 10 forced fumbles.
Taylor received 22 of the 50 votes, in what was one of the closer awards in terms of competition. Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey received 16 votes after a big season. Shawne Merriman, who received criticism from Taylor last week, finished in third place with six votes. The other players that received votes were Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher (4 votes), Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis (1 vote), and Ravens defensive lineman Trevor Pryce (1 vote).
