Antonio Bryant just can't escape trouble in the NFL. Bryant was suspended four games on Friday for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The suspension is due to Bryant being arrested on November 19th on charges of reckless driving. This isn't what the 49ers wanted to hear, considering the fact that they still have a shot at winning a wildcard spot, or even the NFC West. If the Seahawks lose to the Chargers this week and the 49ers defeat the Cardinals, the 49ers will be one game behind Seattle.
Bryant had caught 40 passes this season for a team-high 733 yards and three touchdowns. Bryant signed with the 49ers as a free agent in the offseason after the Cleveland Browns chose not to re-sign him following last season. If the 49ers do not make the playoffs, then his suspension will carry over to the first two games of next season. Despite his troubles, head coach Mike Nolan does not intend for the team to release or trade Bryant during the offseason.
"He takes responsibility for it," Nolan said. "He was not argumentative in any way. He was disappointed for a number of reasons. The first one was that he felt he let his team down at a crucial time. ... He did not blame it on anyone else."
Bryant has been utilized effectively as a deep-ball threat by second-year quarterback Alex Smith this season, rather than a possession receiver. He is averaging 18.3 yards a catch. This Sunday, third receiver Bryan Gilmore will replace Bryant as a starting receiver. Second receiver Arnaz Battle will remain the other starting receiver.
PFC Analysis: Plain and simple, it was another idiotic incident to chalk up on the board for Bryant's career. Although he wasn't having Pro Bowl numbers or anything, the 49ers did count on him for at least one big play down the field per game. It's tough to say whether or not Gilmore can fill that role or not, but with the team facing the Cardinals now potent offense, the 49ers couldn't afford to lose an offensive weapon.
