The New York Jets have announced that they will start quarterback Brooks Bollinger against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday in place of veteran Vinny Testeverde. Bollinger has played well the past few weeks in relief of Testeverde, and nearly rallied his team to victory this past Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
Against the Chargers, Bollinger threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns after taking over late in the third quarter.
Another reason for Bollinger getting the start, besides his production, is the fact that Testeverde tweaked his right Achilles' tendon against San Diego.
"I liked what I saw and that was part of the process," said Jets' head coach Herman Edwards. "If Vinny was going to struggle with his calf, the one thing we knew is Vinny's not good coming off the bench, Brooks is. We'd have some energy coming off the bench with Brooks. And it worked out that way."
In Bollinger's only start this year against the Ravens, he was very cautious and lost 13-3. He has been more aggressive in relief.
"Your mind says yes but your body isn't allowing you to, kind of my situation right now as far as starting and playing and all that kind of stuff," said Testaverde. "Brooks did a great job and looking where I'm at, he probably gives us the best chance to win right now."
Bollinger will be missing some extra weapons though. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet's season ended due to injury. Tight end Chris Baker will miss the rest of the season as well.
