He wasn't supposed to return to the field until October. And after Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley suffered an injury that'll keep him out the rest of the season, the spirit of Browns fans was brightened again when Braylon Edwards returned to the practice field Saturday.
"This is the happiest I've ever been," Edwards said.
Edwards, who is entering his second season, underwent knee surgery on his ACL back in January. He suffered the injury while trying to make a leaping catch on December 4th. His promising rookie season ended early, and fans were upset that the injury would carry over to the 2006-2007 season. However, that may not be the case anymore.
"I shouldn't be where I am," said Edwards, on the unexpected progress that he has made. "But I am."
There is even a chance that Edwards will be able to play Week 1 for the Browns, as either a starter or a third wide receiver. Regardless of when he returns though, he should be 100% by October 1st.
"It's looking real good," said Edwards. "I think my body is a little different than anybody's. I do have a little something special."
Although the Browns are thrilled with Edwards progress, they also want to be very careful at the same time.
"God forbid, if anything happens to our race and creed," said Browns owner Randy Lerner, "they should use his DNA to rebuild the population."
With Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. returning this season, the duo could certainly overshadow the loss of Bentley. Young quarterback Charlie Frye will have to play a major role in their success as well, of course.
