Broncos running backs Garrison Hearst and rookie Tatum Bell both sat out Mondays preseason game with injuries.
Hearst came over from San Francisco in the offseason and was expected to be the team's primary back. But with the emergence of Quintin Griffin and the early draft selection of Tatum Bell, Hearst may end up fighting for the team's #3 running back. Missing preseason games certainly won't help his cause, he is expected to play in the team's second preseason game against Buffalo.
Bell suffered a broken finger. He saw a hand specialist last week, and since has been working in a team conditioning program. The team hopes he will return to practice this week, and possibly play in the team's preseason game this weekend.
With the injuries to both backs, and with how Griffin continues to impress, Griffin should be the favorite as the team's starting halfback. However, with the Broncos, it seems whoever they throw in the backfield is guaranteed at least 1200 yards.
