Cleveland, OH. (PFCritics) -- The Cleveland Browns signed first-round draft pick Kamerion Wimbley on Saturday, making him the first "real" pick to sign from the first-round of this year's NFL draft. The only other pick to sign was Mario Williams, the first overall pick of the draft. Wimbley signed a six-year deal worth $23.7 million. He was the 13th overall pick in the draft.
"It shows the fans and the team I'm ready to be a Brown," Wimbley said.
According to Wimbley's agent, Joe Linta, Wimbley's deal includes $9.3 million in guaranteed money. The Browns have not had a first-rounder sign before training camp since Courtney Brown did so back in 2000.
"I told these guys we have two choices. We can finish this thing and go first or sit around and play chess until the No. 12 and No. 14 get done," Linta said.
Wimbley, at 6-foot-3, 245 pounds, played defensive end for Florida State in college. However, the Browns plan on switching him to the outside linebacker position in their 3-4 scheme. To begin the season, Wimbley may only be played in special pass-rushing packages. The Browns hope Wimbley can rack up a lot of sacks, an area they lacked in last season.
"We are extremely pleased to have Kamerion signed prior to the start of training camp," said Browns general manager Phil Savage in a statement.
Right now, veteran linebacker Matt Stewart may start the season over Wimbley. By mid-season, many believe Wimbley will be playing full-time.
