The Cleveland Browns have traded disgruntled quarterback Trent Dilfer to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for quarterback Ken Dorsey and an undisclosed draft pick in the 2007 draft, which will likely be a 7th rounder. The Browns acquired Dilfer last offseason from the Seattle Seahawks for a fourth-round pick, and he was named their starting quarterback ahead of rookie Charlie Frye.
In San Francisco, Dilfer will help mentor the young Alex Smith, who was the first overall pick in the draft last year.
"Trent was a player we had interest in last season," said 49ers head coach Mike Nolan. "We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers."
Dilfer led the Browns to a 4-7 start before leaving with an injury and giving way to Frye as the starter. On the season, Dilfer threw for 2,321 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
"Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year," said Browns general manager Phil Savage. "At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties."
The Browns may still attempt to acquire more of a veteran presence to back-up Frye.
