The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made it clear that their focus in free agency was at the quarterback position. The Buccaneers signed veteran free-agent quarterback
Jeff Garcia to a two-year deal after playing with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Garcia, despite being 37 years old, was able to take over for the injured
Donovan McNabb last season to help lead the Eagles to the postseason.
The Buccaneers decided to actually go through with the trade to acquire Denver Broncos quarterback
Jake Plummer, despite his reported will to retire as a result of the deal. Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen stated that the team traded an undisclosed draft pick in the 2008 draft in exchange for him. Allen also stated that the team does not intend to trade Plummer now, although it would have to be a possibility still. The Houston Texans could be interested in attaining Plummer.
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers still have quarterback
Chris Simms in the mix, along with last year's rookie quarterback
Bruce Gradkowski. Simms missed the final 13 games last season due to a ruptured spleen, but the team signed him to a two-year contract extension in December. If the Buccaneers decide to go with a three-way quarterback competition, this could be the most competitive one in NFL history.
