The Buffalo Bills have slapped the franchise tag on standout cornerback Nate Clements, who was set to pursue a large contract as a free agent. Now, Clements will remain with the Bills for at least one more year with a salary of $5.89 million.
"We consider Nate a valuable member of our defense and believe he will play an important role in re-establishing our defense as one of the toughest units in the league," said team general manager Marv Levy.
Although the Bills put the franchise tag on Clements, they would still like to negotiate a long-term deal with him. Clements and his agent were not surprised by the Bills' decision.
Clements is allowed to stay away from minicamp and training camp until he accepts the offer, which could affect the team's chemistry under new head coach Dick Jauron. The Bills hope that Clements will agree to the deal as soon as possible.
Clements has proven to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He was the 21st overall pick in the NFL draft, coming out of Ohio State. Clements is also a standout punt returner for the Bills.
