The Buffalo Bills have hired former Chicago Bears' head coach Dick Jauron to take over for Mike Mularkey, who resigned from his head coaching position last week. Jauron is regarded as a very good defensive coach and is the first major move by new general manager Marv Levy.
Jauron was also the interim coach of the Detroit Lions for a short time this season. He beat out five other candidates for the job. Jauron was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2001, when the Bears had a 13-3 record. In his four other seasons though, they were only 22-43.
Jauron was the Lions' defensive coordinator for most of last season before subbing for Steve Mariucci, who was fired. The Lions were 1-4 under Jauron.
