New York Jets QB Chad Pennington has turned down the Jets' offer to lower his base salary for 2006 to $1 million. The remaining $8 million that he was supposed to make would then have to be earned through incentives. Pennington knows that the Jets could very well take a quarterback in the draft this year and with a new coach, he may not be able to earn those incentives.
Pennington has also had a lot of shoulder problems, and it may be worth too much trouble for the Jets to keep him. The Jets must make a decision on Pennington's future by March 3rd. If they release him, the Jets could be interested in taking QB Matt Leinart or QB Jay Cutler in the first round of the draft.
