Right after signing fifth-round draft pick Jeremy Bloom, the Philadelphia Eagles signed third-round pick Chris Gocung to a four-year deal on Wednesday. Gocung, a defensive end/linebacker, played for Cal Poly in college. He won the Buck Buchanan Award last season, recognizing him as the top defensive player in Division I-AA. He had an incredible 23.5 sacks last season to go along with four forced fumbles.
Gocung, who is 6-foot-2, 264 pounds, recorded 212 tackles and 42 sacks during his entire college career. The Eagles wanted to make sure no one else selected him, and traded their third-round pick (76th overall) and seventh-round pick (220th overall) to the New York Jets for their third-round pick, which was five spots higher.
The team also released cornerback Eddie Canonico.
