After a rumor that he was in critical condition Sunday night, we are pleased to report that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms is "ok" after having his spleen removed. Simms was on the ground, clutching his midsection after getting hit repeatedly against the Carolina Panthers Sunday.
"Chris is doing well and we anticipate a full recovery," said team physician Dr. Joe Diaco. Simms was said to be in stable condition.
Simms left the field during the game but returned in the fourth-quarter to lead the Buccaneers to a field goal drive, giving them a 24-23 lead. The Carolina Panthers won after a late field goal.
According to head coach Jon Gruden, Simms has hurt his ribs and was suffering from dehydration early in the game. It is not yet known whether this caused the spleen injury, or if that occured later. Simms also had a blood transfusion performed at the hospital.
Simms will probably miss 2-3 months, meaning rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski may get the start while he is gone. The Buccaneers are heading into a bye week, so they'll have plenty of time to scout a veteran to possibly start or back up Gradkowski while Simms is gone.
Simms had been struggling this season, but finally started showing signs of success against the Buccaneers after being down early.
