The New England Patriots released starting running back Corey Dillon on Friday, a move that was expected by many. Dillon shared his load with rookie running back Laurence Maroney last season, and will not be considering retirement. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick appreciated what Dillon brought to the table during his three-year stay in New England.
"Those contributions extend beyond his individual on-field achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team," said Belichick.
Dillon still had three years remaining on his contract and was scheduled to make $4.4 million this season. Teams in need of a running back may offer Dillon a deal, but whether or not they would want him as a starter would be debatable.
