In a move that did not come as a complete surprise, Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green was fired after another losing season by the franchise. Green and the Cardinals finished with a 5-11 record this season, bringing Green's three-year record to 16-32 in Arizona. Green will be paid the final $2.5 million of his contract.
Green started somewhat bright in his first year, finishing at 6-10. The following two seasons, the team has finished at 5-11, which was a big disappointment considering the talented offensive players the team had developed. The Cardinals never were able to fix their offensive line issues under Green, which ultimately led to their downfall. Green was probably best known this season for an outburst he had following the biggest collapse of the 2006-2007 season against the Chicago Bears.
"He told us how lucky we are to be here and have such a great job and play such a great game," said Cardinals rookie quarterback Matt Leinart, "and just to know that we're all professionals and we all can play in this league and have a good offseason. That's about it."
The Cardinals have had only one winning season since 1984, and Green wasn't able to turn that around. Leinart and free agent running back Edgerrin James were supposed to elevate the Cardinals into a contender this season, but it never came to be. The Cardinals won their first game of the season over the San Francisco 49ers, but then went on to lose eight straight. The team did end the year on a positive note, finishing off the year with a 4-3 mark in the final seven games.
