After being one of the elite backs in the NFL just a few years ago, Marshall Faulk will have to watch Steven Jackson start ahead of him. Mike Martz confirmed the move when he stated that Faulk will be used to change the pace next season behind Jackson.
Faulk's best seasons were from 1999-2001, where he had over 2,000 total yards each season. Jackson did a great job in his rookie season last year, where he rushed for 673 yards and averaged 5.0 yards per carry.
"It gives him the best opportunity to go in there and have a terrific impact on the game," Martz said. "Because now you've got him unencumbered, so to speak, where he's fresher throughout the game. Then you've got the young guy who is the big physical guy who carries the load, so I think it's a terrific 1-2 punch."
Mike Martz also commented on how Faulk would react to the situation.
"Marshall was probably ready to do that during the season," said Martz. "He's so excited for Steven, he really is. He wants to be there for Steven and help him and still have his role."
Martz also believes that this move can extend Faulk's career, who has been suffering injuries the past few seasons.
