After weeks of fierce competition, the Miami Dolphins have finally named a week one starter. Jay Fiedler has won the starting quarterback job over 27 year old A.J. Feely. Feely has only started five games in his short career, backing up Donovan McNabb in Philadelphia. Fiedler, a 32 year old proven veteran, has started 53 games over his nine year career.

Fiedler’s job will be secure for at least the season opener against Tennessee. The last time Fiedler faced Tennessee, in 2001, his team won 31-23, and Fiedler completed 12 of 20 passes for 225 along with two touchdowns zero interceptions thrown.

During the preseason, Fiedler was 20 for 33, threw for 199 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Feely’s numbers were close, completing 32 of 41 passes for 244 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, but obviously not as good in the eyes of coach Dave Wannstedet.

The Dolphins sacrificed a second round draft pick to acquire Feely, who at the time was playing in Philadelphia as the third string quarterback. Feely’s deal could be worth 21.6 million dollars over five years. Giving up so much, you would think Feely would be the quarterback of the future.

Fiedler finds himself in a familiar position this season, hanging by a single thread with no job security. A single thread can only hold so much weight.
