The New Orleans Saints have fired head coach Jim Haslett after a 3-13 season. Although the Saints really struggled due to Hurricane Katrina taking away their home, Haslett's job has been on the line the past few years.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said he did take into consideration the fact that the hurricane caused the Saints poor record.
"I think Jim performed really well under some adverse conditions, unprecedented conditions," Loomis said. "But unfortunately we haven't had the results the past five seasons that you come to expect in this league. It wasn't based just on this season."
Haslett sent this message to his team:
"There were some unexpected challenges, but in any case our record isn't good enough," he said.
Loomis already has some coaches in mind that could replace Haslett. He said that interviews could begin within the next few days.
Haslett, unlike the other coaches that have been fired recently, did not have a good record. He was 45-51 as the Saints head coach, and had his best season in his first(2000).
The Saints have not been better than .500 since 2002. The team lost 11 of its past 12 this year, including a 27-13 loss against Tampa Bay to close the season.
"For all of us, it was a time to follow a new direction, to bring closure to what was a disappointing year recordwise and move forward," said Haslett in a statement.
