Mike Heimerdinger has left the New York Jets after spending one year with the organization. Heimerdinger was the Jets offensive coordinator, but was inclined to leave after the Denver Broncos confirmed that their offensive coordinator position is open. Their former coordinator, Gary Kubiak, is not coaching the Houston Texans.
Heimerdinger has a history with Mike Shanahan and the Broncos. He was their wide receivers coach from 1995 to 1999.
"I have great respect for Mike Heimerdinger as a football coach," said Jets head coach Eric Mangini. "Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action would be for the Jets to go in a different direction."
The Jets offense struggled under Heimerdinger last year, but the offense was crushed by injuries. Starting QB Chad Pennington missed most of the season, RB Curtis Martin was not able to reach 1,000 yards due to injury, and Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae was out.
