Last week it was a receiver who will seemingly do anything to keep his name in the limelight in Terrell Owens. This week In The Dawg Pound, we will look at a receiver who would rather keep his name out of the media, but his mouth will not allow him to, and that is Oakland Raiders receiver Randy Moss.
First, it was his comments just days before the start of the regular season, when he said that “thing’s weren’t right around here” and “something’s fishy”. He follows that up a month later by saying that he’s loving life and could care less about football. Well, that’s great to hear coming from your captain and supposed team leader. Instead of complaining and moping about no one on the team caring, how about you get in someone’s face and make them care? Regardless of how bad the coaching staff may be, regardless of how untalented the team may be (of which they are extremely talented), it is your job as captain to keep the ship afloat. Make sure guys don’t get down on themselves, call players only meetings, make sure everyone is giving their all out there on the field. But then look at who we’re talking about, a guy who openly admits that HE doesn’t give his all on every play. The fact that the Raiders even elected him as their captain shows just how bad their in house leadership is. Moss throughout his career has been a loner who doesn’t talk much and often times alienates himself from his teammates.
As bad as the Raiders were in the late 1990’s, they still had quality team leadership in the form of team players like Tim Brown and Steve Wisnewski. A team is only as good as it’s leader, and in the Raiders case, the leader is probably the worst in the league.
