The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Mike Shula as their new quarterbacks coach on Thursday. Shula was able to reach a deal with Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio at the Senior Bowl, and he is expected to sign a contract some time next week.
Shula had a 26-23 record during his four seasons as head coach for Alabama. After having a 10-2 record in 2005, the team declined to 6-6 this season, resulting in his firing. He was actually a candidate to be the Miami Dolphins head coach before they went with San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron instead.
Shula will replace former quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson, who was fired after the season. Shula will have his hands full with the Jaguars quarterback situation, since it is unclear who will be the teams starter next season between Byron Leftwich and David Garrard. Leftwich started six games this season before suffering an ankle injury and being replaced by backup quarterback David Garrard for the rest of the season. Neither quarterback has really shined over the other.
