The Jacksonville Jaguars signed running back Fred Taylor to a three-year contract extension, despite the success of rookie running back Maurice-Jones Drew last season. Taylor, who is 31 years old, is now under contract through 2010.
"I always wanted to finish my career in Jacksonville," Taylor said. "It's rare that you see guys stick with one team. ... I'm extremely happy. I'm not just saying that. The most impressive thing about it all is I get to retire in Jacksonville."
Taylor didn't have a bad season at all, despite Drew's success. Taylor ran for 1,146 yards and five touchdowns, including a 5.0 yards per carry average (a career best). According to reports, Taylor's new four-year deal is worth $23 million.
Taylor regretted some rather up front comments he had made before last season regarding a possible contract extension.
"It kind of makes me feel bad that I kind of had a couple harsh words through frustration last offseason, saying I wanted a deal," Taylor said. "But sometimes you do have to speak up for yourself."
Taylor and Drew combined for one of the league's best up-and-coming tandems. Their most memorable performance probably came against the Indianapolis Colts, a game in which the Colts were completely embarrassed.
"I feel like to have Maurice, it's a blessing in disguise and then Greg [Jones] is coming back and they finalized my contract," Taylor said. "I'm going to be there. I'm going to give them every ounce that I have in me."
Taylor has had some injury problems throughout his career, but only missed one game last season due to a hamstring injury.
