Jared Allen has made it clear: he wants out of Kansas City. The Chiefs defensive end requested a trade over the weekend after contract negotiations with the team broke down, according to Ken Harris, Allen's agent. According to the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs rejected his request. Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson stated that the team will offer Allen a tender on March 1.
Allen has had 27.5 sacks during his three years with the Chiefs, but was earning less than the average salary for most defensive ends in the league, especially of his caliber.
"His production has outpaced everyone else on the defensive line exponentially," Harris said.
If the Chiefs offer a high tender to Allen, he would earn about $2.35 million next season. However, he is not looking forward to future negotiations with the team with how things have gone thus far.
"For me, personally, it's beyond that point," Allen said. "I feel shocked and hurt. Requesting a trade was probably the toughest thing I've had to do. It's nothing personal against the town of Kansas City and the fans. It's been great. (But) it doesn't look like my future is going to be there, and I have to accept that. That's why this is so hard. All the hard work I've put in -- the blood, sweat and tears -- I wanted to finish my career there. I was led to believe I was going to."
Allen, who was a fourth-round pick in 2004, would certainly draw interest from many other teams in the league if he were to become available.
