The Dallas Cowboys have hired Jason Garrett to be a coach for their team, but the team did not indicate what exactly he would do yet. After Bill Parcells retired on Monday, the team has been searching for a new head coach. Garrett is more suited for offensive coordinator, which is the position he will likely be given once the team finds their main guy.
Garrett, who was the quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins the past two seasons, drew quite a bit of interest from teams searching for an offensive coordinator, including the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were denied permission to speak with Garrett.
"The nature and timing of this hire is unique in that we were dealing with a limited window of time in which to talk to Jason about returning to Dallas," said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
Jones hopes that Garrett will be able to bring a new fire to their offensive approach, to compliment what Tony Romo provided this season.
"Jason is someone who is held in high regard as a bright offensive mind throughout the NFL," Jones said. "We are grateful to the Dolphins for granting the Cowboys permission to explore this opportunity. Jason will now proceed further in our head coaching search as an in-house candidate."
The Cowboys plan on speaking with several people to fill their head coaching position, including Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, and Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs.
