The San Francisco 49ers placed center Jeremy Newberry on the injured reserve list on Wednesday. The move was expected as he had surgery on his left knee eight days ago. Health has been a problem for Newberry, who has been placed on the injured reserve list in three of the past four seasons. Some wonder if Newberry will decide to retire from the league after his latest injury.

Newberry had been rehabilitating in the offseason, and Newberry thought he was the healthiest he had been in years. Unfortunately, during the first week of summer practice, he was having problems with both knees, before learning about deteriorating cartilage in his left knee. Eric Heitmann, who has been the starter the past two seasons due to Newberry's injuries, will remain as the starting center.
