After weeks of speculation, the trade of John Abraham is finally complete. Abraham was involved in a three-team trade involving the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, and the Denver Broncos. Abraham ended up with the Falcons.
"This might be the easiest transition of my life," he said. "It's not like I have to be the main guy. I'm just filling one of the pieces to the puzzle."
The Falcons now have a very impressive defensive line that features Patrick Kerney and the newly acquired Abraham. Abraham has been wanting a long-term deal from the Jets the past few years, but he never got it. Now, he will be closer to home with Atlanta.
"My family can come to the games without flying and without missing work," he said.
With the Falcons, Abraham will make $45 million over six-years. That deal may include $18 million in guaranteed money.
It is believed that the Jets wanted the talented young quarterback Matt Schaub for Abraham, but he is too valuable to the Falcons. If Vick goes down, they won't miss a beat with Schaub. The three teams involved decided that the Jets would send Abraham to the Falcons and their 15th pick in the draft to the Broncos. Denver would then send the 29th pick in the draft to the Jets. The Falcons also received the third-round pick in this year's draft and fourth-round pick in next year's draft from the Broncos.
"I'm one of those guys who says that you absolutely protect your draft picks. That's what you build your team around," McKay said. "To trade the No. 15 pick straight up (for Abraham) would have been very hard for us."
The trade is one of the biggest ones in the offseason so far.
