The New York Jets have designated defensive end John Abraham as their franchise player. The move did not come as a surprise, and had been rumored for awhile. Abraham was the Jets' franchise player last year also and was not pleased with the move. He was hoping that the Jets would give him a long-term deal.
Abraham will not make $8.33 million in 2006, which is $2 million more than he made last year. The Jets may still try and trade Abraham though, since they could find themselves over the salary cap soon.
"By franchising John, it speaks volumes about what type of player we feel he is, and we stand behind our decision, with the full realization that at this point in time it is in the best interest of the club from both a financial and competitive standpoint," said team general manager Mike Tannenbaum in a statement.
Abraham has been a solid defensive player for the Jets during his career.
