The Atlanta Falcons signed second-round cornerback Jimmy Williams to a deal on Thursday. The Falcons have now signed all of their draft picks and are ready to go for training camp. Williams, who played for Virginia Tech in college, was the Falcons' top pick since they did not have a first round selection. Williams was projected by many to be selected in the top 15 picks of the first round, so the Falcons may feel as if they got a steal. Williams is joining his former teammate in college, DeAngelo Hall.
Williams did an outstanding job at the safety position for Virginia Tech originally, but then was asked to play cornerback after DeAngelo Hall went to the NFL. Williams was just as good, if not better, at the corner position and is likely the best cornerback entering the draft.
Due to his versatility in college, teams can play Williams at both safety and cornerback if they choose not to start him right away. However, to make a proper adjustment to the NFL, it would be best if he stays at one position, cornerback. He is a very hard hitter as a cornerback, which comes from his instincts as a former safety. He is a very good open-field tackler and rarely allows someone to break free once he gets a hand on them. He is able to leap very well and should not have problems against the taller receivers in jump-ball situations, but there is some concern that he may get burned down the field occasionally. Williams has a lot of promise, but could be similar to "Pacman" Jones in the sense that he will need to attain some NFL experience until his true talents are showcased.
The Falcons also signed running back Jerious Norwood, offensive tackle Quinn Ojinnaka, wide receiver Adam Jennings and quarterback D.J. Shockley.
