With the fifth pick in the second round of the draft, the Atlanta Falcons selected cornerback Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech. Williams was projected on some boards as going as high as the St. Louis Rams at number eleven overall. This is Atlanta's first pick of the draft, since they didn't have a first-rounder. The move makes sense, as Williams joins DeAngelo Hall, his former teammate.
Scouting Information on Williams: Jimmy Williams did an outstanding job at the safety position for Virginia Tech originally, but then was asked to play cornerback after DeAngelo Hall went to the NFL. Williams was just as good, if not better, at the corner position and is likely the best cornerback entering the draft.
Due to his versatility in college, teams can play Williams at both safety and cornerback if they choose not to start him right away. However, to make a proper adjustment to the NFL, it would be best if he stays at one position, cornerback. He is a very hard hitter as a cornerback, which comes from his instincts as a former safety. He is a very good open-field tackler and rarely allows someone to break free once he gets a hand on them. He is able to leap very well and should not have problems against the taller receivers in jump-ball situations, but there is some concern that he may get burned down the field occasionally. Williams has a lot of promise, but could be similar to "Pacman" Jones in the sense that he will need to attain some NFL experience until his true talents are showcased.
