It wasn't a very long retirement for Junior Seau. Just four days after "retiring" or "graduating" earlier in the week, the New England Patriots signed the veteran linebacker to a one-year deal. Seau wants to reach the Super Bowl, and the Patriots are certainly a team capable of doing that. He'll be facing his former team twice this year - the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots contacted Seau a day after he retired and asked for his services since linebacker Tedy Bruschi broke his wrist.
"When a championship team calls, you've definitely got to answer the call and definitely look into it," Seau said. "That's what I did. Obviously I understand where their focus is, to win championships. That's something that I'm missing in my career. I just felt it was an opportunity I needed to seize."
With the Patriots, Seau will be an inside and outside linebacker, but he won't be an insurance policy. He'll be incorporated into the defense throughout the game, even if he doesn't start.
"Wherever I fit is obviously going to be to their liking and mine," said Seau.
Seau had played with the San Diego Chargers most of his career until being traded to the Miami Dolphins in April of 2003 for a fifth-round draft pick, when the Chargers felt he was past his prime. He did great in his first season with the Dolphins, but he has been injured throughout the past two seasons.
