Cornerback Ty Law and quarterback Jay Fiedler were among several cuts made by the New York Jets in order to get under the salary cap heading into next season. The team also released fullback Jerald Sowell and offensive tackle Jason Fabini.
Right now, the Jets are still trying to negotiate a deal to bring back quarterback Chad Pennington by reducing his salary. If they cannot negotiate something soon, they will probably release him. The Jets may be interested in selecting quarterback Matt Leinart in the draft, but he could already be gone by time the Jets get to pick.
Jets new head coach Eric Mangini is trying to make the team his own by establishing players that he believes in, while also keeping the team under the salary cap. The team also cut linebacker Barry Gardner, wide receiver Harry Williams Jr., and defensive tackle Lance Legree.
Law only spent one season with the Jets and performed very well.
"We were very fortunate to have a player of Ty's caliber in 2005," said team general manager Mike Tannebaum. "Ty is a warrior and a class act and we appreciate his contributions this past season."
Fiedler was signed as a backup to Pennington, but injured his shoulder seven plays after Pennington was lost for the season. Fiedler never returned, and handed the job over to Brooks Bollinger and Vinny Testeverde.
