The energetic former St. Louis Rams coach turned down the Detroit Lions offer that would have made him the offensive coordinator of their football team. Martz was actually ready to accept the job, but turned it down.
"Obviously, I took the job," Martz said. "It just didn't work out with the money...There's a bottom-line figure my agent has and I didn't want to have the details, so we just move on."
Martz was interested in joining Lions new head coach Rod Marinelli. The Lions offense has really underachieved the past few years, and Martz could have been a perfect fit to get pump some life into them.
"My visit with Rod was exceptional," Martz said. "I think he's going to be a superstar. Everybody's got talent, nice facilities and all those kinds of things, but who you work with is critical and that was a big plus."
Martz was fired from the Rams on January 2nd after the team finished at 6-10 this season. Martz missed the final 11 games of the year due to health problems.
Martz interviewed for head-coaching positions with the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders, but was not hired. However, Martz said he has no intentions of calling it a career.
"I have no desire to retire," Martz said. "But to have a year when you have your health, it's a blessing."
