For teams looking at signing a new quarterback in free agency, they may have to look no further than Steve McNair, Drew Brees, and Brian Griese. All three men could very well be cut by their respective teams in March.
Tennessee & McNairThe Titans will re-structure McNair's contract if they can, because there is no way that they'll allow him to receive the three-year, $50 million option. They may want him to remain under contract for one more season with a base salary of $9 million. The Titans may cut McNair if they can't re-structure his contract, and they only have Billy Volek and Matt Mauck as backups.
San Diego & BreesThe Chargers may allow Brees to become a free agent due to some contract stipulations that he has. There is a good chance that if a deal is not reached by next Thursday, that Brees will become a free agent. The Chargers do not want to make him a franchise player. If they cut Brees, Phillip Rivers would probably become the starting quarterback.
Tampa Bay & GrieseThe Buccaneers will have to pay Griese a $2.6 million bonus in March if they do not cut him. The Buccaneers need to clear some salary cap room, and may stick with Chris Simms as their starter next season. They would love to keep Griese, but the cost may not be worth it.
