It looks like Steve McNair will quarterback the Titans for at least one more year. The Titans have agreed to pay $1 million to keep McNair for this season. He will be allowed to become a free agent after the season. By paying him the extra $1 million, they won't have to pay a $50 million option that would've kept McNair with the team until 2009.
"What this amounts to is they decided to pay $1 million and not add three years to his contract, so this is his last year. At the end of this year, Steve will be a free agent," said agent Bus Cook.
Titans general manager Floyd Reese said that the team will still try to negotiate a new deal with McNair if it gives them more room under the salary cap.
"The cap number is much bigger than we'd like to live with. It would help if we extend his contract, and it also helps us get more players. He will for sure be a Titan for another year, and then hopefully more after that," Reese said.
McNair will be making about $23.4 million in 2006 on the Titans cap, which is a huge amount. McNair was a co-MVP with Peyton Manning a few years ago.
Titans head coach Jeff Fisher believes that despite his age, McNair still has a lot left.
"It depends on health, depends on his commitment and on his commitment to the offseason and how he comes into camp. And of course, it depends on what you do around him," Fisher said.
The Titans have the third pick in the draft and could select Vince Young or Matt Leinart to be the future of their team.
"We have to look at the future of this franchise and the future of the quarterback position," Fisher said. "It doesn't necessarily mean we're going to draft a player to come in here and start in the opener."
The Titans know that their team may still be a year away from contending again, which would allow McNair to provide some leadership to the young players.
