With the sixteenth pick in the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected safety Jason Allen of Tennessee. The Dolphins were interested in cornerback Jimmy Williams at first, but decided to go with Allen at the safety position. They were bound to pick on defense, since they already added quarterback Daunte Culpepper to their team.
Scouting Information on Allen: Jason Allen played for Tennessee in college. He became a starting cornerback during his sophomore season, and moved to the safety position as a junior. He originally was going to enter the draft last year, and was projected to be a second-round pick. However, he changed his mind, and decided to return to Tennessee for one more season.
Like Texas safety Michael Huff, Allen has had the versatility of playing both cornerback and safety in college. However, whichever team drafts him will probably use him as a safety. He keeps up with most receivers fairly well and has the ability to stop the run at the same time. He has outstanding tackling skills and is knows how to plant a receiver with the big hit when necessary. He was a leader on Tennessee's defense and didn't miss one game to injury during his college career. Although he won't be drafted as a cornerback, his experience at the position will allow coaches to ease him slowly into the lineup if they so choose as a nickel back.
