The Carolina Panthers have made several cuts to trim down their salary cap. The Panthers released running back Stephen Davis, defensive tackle Brentson Buckner, and kick returner Rod Smart. Combined, the moves saved about $4 million in salary. The moves were not too surprising, but head coach John Fox appreciates their contributions.
"Each of these men played an important role in the success we have enjoyed here," said Fox said. "It is not easy saying goodbye to them. They were productive players and their contributions played a major role in our going to the Super Bowl in 2003 and returning to the NFC Championship game last season."
Davis joined the Panthers a few years ago and had a monster season in 2003, rushing for 1,444 yards. However, ever since that season, Davis has been plagued by injury. Two years ago, Davis missed most of the season to a knee injury. He returned this past season and rushed for 12 touchdowns as mainly a goal-line back, but was placed on the injured reserve in December.
Buckner, a 13-year veteran, is an especially tough cut for the team due to the leadership and stability he has brought since 2001.
Smart, who played in Vince McMahon's XFL league, was known as having "He Hate Me" on his jersey in the past. He returned kicks for the Panthers, but lost his job to Jamal Robertson this season. The Panthers will still have to make a few moves to get under the cap.
