Controversial players can find a home if they are good. The New England Patriots signed veteran punter Todd Sauerbrun on Friday, as he becomes the team's third punter in the past six weeks. Sauerbrun was signed after their previous two punters had already been placed on the injured reserve. Josh Miller, their punter to start the season, was placed on the IR several weeks ago due to a shoulder injury. They then signed Ken Walter to punt the next four games, before he was placed on the IR with a foot injury.
Sauerbrun played for the Broncos last season, averaging 43.8 yards per kick. After serving a four-game suspension this season for using the banned supplement ephedra, the Broncos released him. Sauerbrun is still considered one of the league's better punters, and has made the Pro Bowl three times during his career.
"We looked at all our options, and feel like this one is the best one for the football team," Belichick said.
Sauerbrun will be the team's punter this weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and probably heading into the postseason as well.
