The Washington Redskins have placed running back Clinton Portis on the injured reserve after breaking a bone in his right hand against the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the fourth injury he's had this season, one of the major reasons the Redskins have struggled so much after making the playoffs last season.
"It was a rough year," Portis said. "It wasn't meant for us. It wasn't meant for me. Over the years, it's been lovely for me, and now I'm finally running into a bump in my road."
Portis had rushed for 523 yards and seven touchdowns this season, but has been replaced by backup running back Ladell Betts often due to his injuries. Portis had surgery on Monday and would have missed at least a month of action. By then, there would only have been about two weeks left in the season, and not worth risking another injury for Portis is the reason is was sent to the IR.
"It seemed like every time he got to feeling better, something else would happen," said Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs. "He never really got back to the form that he had last year."
The Redskins will try to get their offense moving this week with quarterback Jason Campbell seeing his first NFL action. Campbell was the team's first round draft pick two years ago. Although Mark Brunell wasn't bad this season, it's time for the Redskins to look at their future.
