In the past, it seems that some number one draft picks resulting in quarterback selections see the player with a clipboard in hand for a year or two. That's what happened with Carson Palmer - and is still happening with Phillip Rivers.
The 49ers aren't going to wait any longer to make their move though. The team announced that Alex Smith, the first pick in this year's entire draft, will start this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts' tenacious defense.
Tim Rattay lost the job after not being able to produce any offense on the road - particularly against the Arizona Cardinals this past Sunday.
Smith has seen action already on the road, but the 49ers were losing significantly both times.
"I like the look in Alex's eye," said head coach Mike Nolan. "I've always said that the intangibles are the things I like about Alex. I've maintained confidence in him."
Rattay has been decent this year, throwing for 677 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions.
"Tim has handled everything very well, but at this time in the process, I believe it's time to get Alex in the game," Nolan said. "At 1-3, we didn't draft Alex to just sit him on the bench. At 1-3, I believe we need to begin to utilize him."
The Colts have not allowed a team to score more than ten points this season, so Smith will have his hands full. If he succeeds, he'll sure make an excellent first impression.
