In a trend that is becoming common amongst struggling offenses this season, the Oakland Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Tom Walsh and replaced him with tight ends coach John Shoop. Although Walsh goes way back with head coach Art Shell, he has not been involved in football since 1994 as a coach, and it showed. It was a tough decision for Shell to make.
"Tom has been diligent in his effort to get our offense going in the right direction," Shell said. "In no way should the lack of a more successful offense be placed totally at his feet. Everyone plays a part in the success of any team. ... We look forward to John's input as we continue our goal of bringing the Raiders back to prominence."
Snoop was the team's quarterbacks coach last season after being the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator from 2001-2003. When Snoop was the Bears offensive coordinator though, players often complained about his play calling.
"I think it's a great opportunity for coach Shoop and a great opportunity for us as well," said Raiders wide receiver Alvis Whitted. "It's unfortunate for our offensive coordinator that he had to get demoted. I guess that's just part of this business. It's a bottom-line business."
Oakland, who is a disappointing 2-9 this season, has only scored 132 points this season, which is the lowest in the league. Aaron Brooks has brought a spark to the offense the past two weeks, but the team has still lost both games, mainly due to offensive struggles. On top of that, the Raiders supposed "top weapon," Randy Moss, only has four catches for 34 yards over his past three games.
