It took awhile for the Raiders to find a new head coach. In fact, their "new" coach is Art Shell, who was fired as the Raiders' head coach back in 1994. Shell first discussed the possibility of returning to the Raiders last week with team owner Al Davis.
"It's coming home," Shell said. "It's coming home to finish what I started."
Shell has been working as the senior vice president of football operations and development for the NFL. Davis reportedly regrets ever firing Shell in 1994.
"It's tradition, history, excellence, leadership. It's wrapped up all in one when you mention the name Art Shell," said Davis. The Raiders have gone through five coaches in the past 11 seasons, showing the lack of stability that Davis has had.
When Shell was with the Raiders, he had a 54-38 record in the regular season. He took the Raiders to the AFC Championship back in 1990.
The Raiders are very excited about Shell's return to the organization.
"I'm excited about having a coach. I'm even more excited having a former Raiders player as coach," said linebacker Danny Clark during a phone interview. "He has been in that locker room, played for that owner and knows what it's like to be in silver and black."
Shell was one of the few black coaches in the NFL when he was originally with the Raiders.
