The New York Jets signed quarterback Patrick Ramsey to a one-year contract extension on Tuesday. Ramsey, whom the Jets acquired from the Washington Redskins earlier in the offseason, is scheduled to compete with quarterback Chad Pennington for the team's starting job in training camp.

Ramsey's deal, according to the New York Daily News, is worth about $2.1 million and includes a possible $1.4 million roster bonus for next spring. If the Jets had not made the extension, Ramsey would have been eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next year. However, if the Jets select Pennington as their starting quarterback, Ramsey would probably only stay with the team for one year as a backup, and then be cut or traded before the following season.

Ramsey, the Redskins' first-round draft pick in 2002, was only 10-14 as a starter. Last year, Mark Brunell took over as the starter for Ramsey during the first game, and it remained that way ever since.

On top of acquiring Ramsey, the Jets selected quarterback Kellen Clemens in the second round of this year's draft. Clemens, who played for the University of Oregon, was impressive in camps. Clemens could be a contender for the starting job next season. However, first-year head coach Eric Mangini has actually declared that Clemens, and even third-year quarterback Brooks Bollinger, as well as Ramsey and Pennington, all have a shot at the starting job.
