The Baltimore Ravens signed Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed to a six-year contract extension on Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not released immediately.
Reed, who was the 24th overall pick in the 2002 draft, is without a doubt a perfect example of the Ravens' ability to scout defensive players. In 2004, Reed was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
"Ed is one of the bright young stars in the NFL," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. "He's already had outstanding production, including his MVP season in 2004. He's an emerging leader on our defense and to the whole team for that matter. The way he works, the way he prepares speaks volumes to his teammates."
During his career, Reed has 307 tackles with 22 interceptions. Three of those were returned for touchdowns, including a 106-yard score against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday Night Football. Last year, Reed missed six games due to a high ankle sprain. Still, Reed was named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl and finished the season with 40 tackles.
